Yesterday, on a silvery & slight Sunday afternoon I had the pleasure of listening to Ian Nagoski give a talk concerning his compilation of early 20th century recordings of Greek & Armenian immigrants made in New York. He was lucid & literally inspiring as he catapulted these musical spirits into the room with such a joy that it was impossible not to throw my own in - below is a video introducing his work, & here is a link to the cd. It felt surprisingly important to get a sense of how his project came to fruition - clearly a work of love - free of nostalgia, hoardism & not in the least credentialist.

We're playing a Record Store Day instore with Colour Sun on Saturday

This Saturday, April 16th, is known in some circles as Record Store Day. This means that lots of bands and labels produce limited quantities of unique releases, to be sold only in independent record shops on that day and days following.

For record geeks like me, this is immensely exciting. Jam, a record shop found at number 32 on Falmouths old high st, will be stocking around 70 of these unique and exciting artifacts from all manner of hardworking labels and bands. But! There will also be a live performance by Red River Dialect and by Colour Sun from 2pm. We have also produced a very limited split ep, in a nice card gatefold case. Two songs from each band making 25 minutes.

Here are Colour Sun playing a song that is not on the cd, and below you find a gizmo that plays the two Red River Dialect tracks. There'll be 50 copies at a very reasonable price. Anyone from "out of town" that wants one should email lonorecords@gmail.com

When we open for Baltimore's Arbouretum in Penryn on March 19th we'll be looking and sounding quite different - it'll be our first show with a drummer, the mighty Hugh Cowling who has helped to open up a whole can of new songs which deliver their lights and darks at a vigorous pace. He's really freed Simon, Jack and I into new places and we can't wait for the unveiling.

at The Poly in Falmouth. A sit down show in the theatre, a first for us! It's also the first time we've had the pleasure of playing on a bill with Minko and her band, and Playhouse: a new band featuring the vocals and guitar of one of the best and most underappreciated folksinging fingerpickers in England - Andrew Hockey.

Add to that kind of soul a krautrock loving bass player a deft drummer with a intuitive sense of how to tie those two together and some great new songs... you got Playhouse. Exciting. We're first on the bill and tickets can be found here for £5

Multiple references to granite, "Cornish Badlands" and Spidery Simon's guitar playing.

Matt Poacher at The Liminal wrote an incisive piece here, where there is also a free MP3 of the song 'Dependence' from the album.

Norman Records gave it 4 stars and one of their usual honest and down to earth appraisals, find that (and even buy it!) here.

Feels good that we let the landscape come out through the songs, at least for a few pairs of ears!

We are playing a couple of shows this week. Firstly a gig in Plymouth alongside the wonderful Head of Programmes. Will update on venue details asap (i know, it's two days away). Secondly a show in London on Sunday 28th November.

Live shows & Album

Red River Dialect will be playing two shows in London next week, one at the Note Well Salon on Tuesday August 3rd at The Book Club 100 Leonard Street EC2 4RH.

The event involves a playlist curated by the organisers under the theme of "Friend Music" followed by a slot for participants to play the group a song of their choice on the same theme (bring an ipod or cdr). The second show is at the Kings Cross Social Club on August 5th, I will add more detail when I have it, I think it is free entry and I reckon I'll be playing early on the bill.

First live show in a while, lots of new songs

On Friday July 24th Simon and I will be opening the Penryn leg of Arbouretum's UK tour, it's an exciting prospect made more so by the fact that we've drummed up a new(ish) sound in the time since our last show, and we'll be playing mostly new songs. It also feels like we are ready to do some recording, but I'm always saying that...

An Afternoon Song

We played a show the other night, in an old theatre in Truro, Cornwall. The soundman did three fine things: he mixed the show well, he put chorus on my guitar when I asked for reverb (never used it before) and he plugged his ipod into the mixer at the end of the show, capturing our first ever performance of 'An Afternoon Song'. We are playing as support for Sons of Noel and Adrian, as well as Shoreline, at Miss Peapod's on April 29th. Tickets are £5.50, available from Jam in Falmouth, Miss Peapod's and the Poly.

Red River Dialect will be Simon on lead guitar and keyboard, and myself on guitar and vocals.

Distant Man download

Here is our song Distant Man, available for free download. It is a demo of sorts, but there have been some very kind words from the good people at Microphones in the Trees and Beggin' Your Pardon Miss Joan (whose myspace page is a very worthwhile adventure away from these narrow trails), which inspired me to allow this song to circulate a little more freely and perhaps be listened to away from these endless screens.

Orpheus' Baubles

Last Wednesday the newly christened community radio station Source FM (only available in Penryn and Falmouth) broadcast a live show under the name of Orpheus' Baubles. It was the first show by Tom and Simon and despite a few hitches it came off well. They play a couple of songs by a local singer, interspersing them with a few songs provided by the featured musician under the guise of "inspiration" and a few of the hosts own choices that they feel are kin somehow.

I was happy to get involved when they asked me, and I was happy when it went out. The Red River Dialect songs featured were Lighthouses Crank and Distant Man. Simon chose some great songs by artists I am either unfamiliar with or only dimly aware of, the highlights were Beggin' Your Pardon Miss Joan, and Michael Deakin's 'Wind River Children'. I wish I hadn't chosen the Dylan track, but I'm glad that I got a Jason Molina song and a Six Organs tune delivered all over the Fal valley.

I recorded the show and have uploaded it for download, should anyone be interested to hear it. I recorded it via my cheap MP3 player's "FM Record" function, but I quite like the accompanying hiss. Then again, the whole show is about me, so what's a little hiss? Maybe a lot to you.... I haven't split it into tracks, in keeping with the whole FM thing...
